My new mornings: Yerba Mate. Meditation. Oatmeal.

Morning routines. They are supposed to help us feel grounded, balanced and inspired. Do you have some? I do. And I can totally say they work. I like to upgrade my routines from time to time and bring in some fresh air. In this post I want to share with you some of my morning rituals which make me feel great. Because you never know where inspiration hides.:)

Yerba Mate
In Norway everyone drinks coffee. A big cup of dark strong filtered coffee is almost a must, specially during the dark long winter months. I love coffee too. The smell, the taste, the vibes and the feelings it can create. But sometimes coffee can throw me totally out of balance. I might feel anxious, irritated, confused .. You name it. A few weeks ago I met a friend (Hi, Leif Magne!:) who happened to drink mate instead of coffee and he very kindly introduced me for the drink. He even let me use his mate cup for until we meet again! One morning I tried to sip on mate while meditating. It was unusual. I felt my mind getting activated in a non invasive way. Focused but not overstimulated. It seemed like this drink was supporting my meditation practice and left me with a subtle feeling of clarity and elevation. After this I became a mate meditator.

So, what is Yerba mate at all?  It is a traditional South American brew that is said to offer the “strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate” all in one beverage. It was called “the drink of the gods” by many indigenous South Americans and later “the green gold of the Indios” by European settlers.
Yerba mate is supposed to be one of the healthiest drinks in the world. It provides an energy and productivity boost similar to coffee, but with less caffeine and more nutrients. Yerba mate offers a multitude of health benefits, from improving memory and attention,  reducing inflammation, supporting digestion and supporting weight loss, to boosting immunity system and strengthening the bones.
Feeling like giving it a try? Then I recommend to get the real mate cup – a Gourd – which is a fruit that is dried and hollowed for use as a cup and a Bombilla – a metal straw with a filtered end for sipping your mate. This adds the authenticity to the whole thing and is totally worth it.

My dear friend and teacher Darja says: I don’t get out of the bed without connecting to my soul. I love it and I love this woman so much. Personally, I prefer meditating after a sea bath or a cold shower.
For me meditation is about creating a bridge between my conscious mind and inner wisdom – soul, higher self or however you call it. It brings me into a nice state of perspective where things just make sense.
I meditate to feel good. To remember who I am and what is important for me in life. To be a better person and do a meaningful work. To take care of my body and mind.  To take better care of people I love. To spread good vibes around me. To grow.
I love to work with visualisation where I often use light as a balancing and healing agent for any challenge I come across. It’s a common thing like brushing my teeth or eating breakfast and I truly can’t imagine my life without it.
I recorded a short guided meditation which can be used in the morning but also anytime during the day. You can find it on the bottom of my front page as: Guided meditation.

 Oatmeal. The ultimate comfort food.

39468028_495714774189874_8026329754850295808_nI love oats. In any form. I could eat oats all the time. Sometimes I think I am a horse.:) Recently I got to like the warm and easy-to-make version of oatmeal which gives me enough energy and nutritions, keeps me satisfied long and tastes delicious. Actually, it’s almost like eating pancakes.

What do I need?
1 cup oats
hot water
2-3 dates – cut in pieces
1 Tbsp peanut butter/tahini
pinch of salt
raw chocolate – optional, but OMG! Find recipe for raw chocolate here
1 tsp honey
cinnamon – optional

What do I do?
Place the oats, salt and dates in a bowl. Pour over with hot water, just enough to cover the oats. Mix with a spoon. Let rest for couple of minutes. Top with peanut butter or tahini (or both!), chocolate, fruits or berries and honey if you wish.

What are you morning routines? Do you like to meditate? Do you have some absolute breakfast favourites? I’d like to know! If you feel like sharing, please leave a comment below.

Happy mornings!
